“Ensuring Latino families have the right resources and opportunities to access nature, participate in outdoor recreational activities and feel welcomed on the water has always been one of our long-term goals,” said Edward Herndon, Recruitment, Retention and Reactivation Coordinator for the Virginia Department of Wildlife Resources. “We are proud to partner with Hispanic Access Foundation to not only host Vamos A Pescar Virginia but also continue to make an impact in connecting the Latino community in Virginia to the outdoors.” 

The recently released 2020 census showed Virginia’s Latino population has now doubled since the last census in 2010 and now represent 10.5 percent of the current state population. However, only a small percentage of Hispanics and Latinos identify as anglers.  

“Hispanic Access Foundation strives to host events like Vamos a Pescar because it not only helps introduce the wonders of nature to many Latinos, but it also helps teach the importance of protecting our environment,” said Maite Arce, President and CEO of Hispanic Access Foundation. “Latinos share a passion for the outdoors and hold a strong belief that we have a moral obligation to be good stewards, but sometimes lack the right resources to access these sites. Not only are we exposing Latinos to new skills and places, but we are helping to foster that passion.”
