Details on the detail

Written by: Madeleine de Dios

For the last month I have been detailing with Human Capital within JAO (Joint Administrative Operations) and learning all I can about what goes on behind the scenes. For the first few weeks I was tasked with editing and rewriting the SharePoint sites for different departments. Through this project I was able to learn through fixing the language and making it easier for non-HR personnel to understand, thus making it easier for myself to understand. While doing the SharePoint edits I was also invited to multiple departmental meetings involving future project planning, information sessions about multiple facets of HR, and introduction sessions with different departmental heads while I forge my path through the world of HR.

During my detail I have also had weekly, sometimes multiple times a week, meetings with my detail supervisor. She has prepped and debriefed me on all meetings I’ve been a part of, making sure to answer any and all questions I’ve had, making me feel extremely welcome and encouraging my interest in specific HR departments. We have also been doing trial runs from “cradle to grave” with specific HR actions. Currently, we’re working on a hiring action from the initial discussion of the position needed all the way to the onboarding process. Its been so interesting seeing how much really goes into one person getting hired for the service. All the background conversations that need to be had with hiring managers and even DOI (Department of the Interior). She’s also given me help when it comes to polishing my resume and editing it for the chance for a position within HR at the end of my fellowship.

There are a few more upcoming projects that I’ll be working on including actual hiring actions and assisting with the testing of a new Primary Organizational Chart for all of HR. The hiring actions project is exciting as it gives me real experience with actions that I might be able to take in the future if all goes well with the detail, while working on the organizational chart helps me meet new people, really get to know the organizational structure of HR, and gives me even more foundational experience and knowledge for a department that I really hope to be a part of in the future!
