First month as a Crew Lead Field Ranger.

Written by: Jenifer Johnston

Hello everyone, I’m Jenny! I am a Crew Lead, Field Ranger for the Angeles National Forest. I am a local Angeleno working for my local forest which is pretty cool if you ask me. But I just completed a month in this position, and I’ve enjoyed every second of it. I’ve been able to learn and experience so much I’m still trying to wrap my head around all the valuable information I am receiving. But a couple highlights would be visiting Mt. Wilson, Chantry flats, and working at the Los Angeles County Fair for the America’s Great Outdoors exhibit. Mt.Wilson is such a unique location not only because of its pretty view but it’s also an observatory. It’s located within the San Gabriel Mountains National Monument I highly recommend you go and visit if anyone is ever in the area. Chantry Flats is a developed picnic area that is temporarily closed to the public due to the Bobcat fire. But since this internship is with the forest service I was allowed to go in and that’s where I meet the donkeys in my picture. Chantry has a Pack Station called Adams Pack Station which is unique to me because I had never seen or heard of packing donkeys. Lastly the LA County Fair exhibit, America’s Great Outdoors is such a fun way to engage with the public in an urban location. They have a whole section where the public learns about gold mining, tree cutting, wildlife, off highway vehicles, fire prevention and so much more! Being able to work at some of these booths was such an eye opener for me, because I never realized how many other careers there are in the forest service/ public lands industry. My list of highlights could go on forever, but I’ll save it for my next blog. Can’t wait to share what the following month holds for me.
