Enjoying Spring in Albuquerque

Written by: Kameron Hall

Spring’s finally here in Albuquerque. The weather is nice at around 75 to 82 degrees Fahrenheit, and its a great time to explore the city. Many seasonal events are popping up in the city some of which I’ve had the pleasure of attending. The weather has also been great for just enjoying the outdoors. I’ve spent some of my time on early Saturday mornings at the Downtown Growers' Market in downtown Albuquerque.

The Downtown Growers' Market opens every Saturday morning from 8am to 12pm. The market is located the Robinson Park. The market has more than just meat and produce, there’s a large variety items sold by vendors from local bakeries selling bread and restaurants selling burritos to vendors who sell pottery and jewelry. I love going to the market for grabbing breakfast and also buying my veggies for meals. I also enjoy going to the market to talk to the vendors about their work and experiences. The market is a very welcoming place to chat with people and learn about Albuquerque’s culture and what people do in their pastime in the city.

During Spring, I also enjoy hiking with my dog, Tony. A few weeks ago, I went on a hike with him at the Tingley Beach Park. The park is adjacent to the Rio Grande River and has a few fishing ponds and walking trails. The park is very lush with plenty of shade in the Spring and offers a welcoming change in scenery compared to most other arid and dusty places in Albuquerque. There are a few trials to walk through the park, some of which allow you to walk close to the river. I love hiking in this park, not only for its proximity to downtown Albuquerque, but also because of the nice change in scenery and weather it offers. The shade along the trail helps to break some of the heat from the typical clear skies and its enjoyable seeing all the thriving plant life instead of paved roads, rocky curbs, and the occasional cactus or tumbleweed in downtown and in many other places in the city.

There’s plenty of things to do in Albuquerque during Spring, and I plan on enjoying them, before the Summer heat comes.
