Latinas have played pivotal roles in shaping history and breaking barriers for many years. Whether it's through grassroots organizing, creating mentorship programs, or advocating, Latinas are banding together to create opportunities, amplify their voices, and advocate for our communities and equalities.
Women’s History Month serves as a call to action to address the challenges that Latinas continue to face. By advocating for policies and supporting initiatives that empower Latinas economically and socially, and amplifying their voices in spaces where decisions are made, we can contribute to creating a more inclusive and just society for all.
As we celebrate women’s contributions to society, I reflect on my own journey as a Latina woman. Growing up, my family's immigrant experience shaped my understanding of resilience and determination. I came to this country with my parents and two younger siblings at the age of 8, leaving behind our native Ensenada, Mexico, in search of opportunities. Settling in Santa Ana, California, I found myself navigating a new world, often serving as the translator for my family as we adapted to our new home.
Years later, as I found my footing in the nonprofit sector, I couldn't shake the feeling that with access to the right resources, my family's assimilation could have been smoother. It was this realization that fueled my decision to establish the Hispanic Access Foundation in 2010. I was determined to offer the support to other Latinos that my family had lacked, believing firmly that with the right connections, information, and guidance, Latinos could adapt more readily to the United States, benefiting their families as well as their adopted country.
Today, Hispanic Access Foundation stands as a testament to the power of community and the importance of uplifting one another. We’re proud to have over 76% Latinas working at our organization and will continue to strive towards equality for all communities.
Let us celebrate the resilience, strength, and achievements of Latinas everywhere.
Happy Women’s History Month!
