Saying Goodbye to San Diego Bay NWR Complex

Written by: Jennifer Lagunas

As I wrap up my internship with Fish and Wildlife, I can't help but look back at the incredible journey it has been.

When I first started, environmental education wasn't at the top of my career wishlist. However, as the days turned into weeks, and the weeks into months, it became one of my favorite aspects of the job.

One of the most rewarding parts of this experience has been the opportunity to help coordinate and lead the school group field trip we had with several partners. Watching students immerse themselves in the outdoors and helping them make meaningful connections with nature has been truly fulfilling. These moments have reinforced my belief in the power of education to inspire change and instill a love for the environment in young minds.

Another highlight of my internship has been the chance to collaborate and network with professionals in the field. I've had the privilege of working alongside individuals who are doing remarkable work that aligns with my aspirations for the future. It's been eye-opening to see the impact of federal agencies and public land corps and how they play a crucial role in conservation efforts.

I've also had the opportunity to contribute to habitat restoration efforts and remove invasive species as a part of my internship. This hands-on experience has not only allowed me to apply classroom knowledge but has also expanded my understanding of the flora and fauna of San Diego. I'm now extremely comfortable with identifying species, a skill I've developed significantly since the beginning of my internship.

This internship has been a journey of self-discovery. I've realized the importance of community engagement in environmental work. My experiences have shown me that many people want to explore the outdoors but don't know where to start or lack access to resources. This realization has sparked a passion in me to work with communities, especially those underserved, to provide them with the resources and opportunities to experience and appreciate the outdoors.

While this internship may not have been what I initially envisioned for myself, I am incredibly grateful for the experiences and lessons it has brought. It has shaped my career aspirations and solidified my commitment to environmental education and community engagement. I look forward to applying what I've learned in future endeavors and joining the service again.

Thank you, U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service, for this incredible opportunity.
