The Power of Advocacy to Preserve Our Natural Heritage

Written by: Evelyn

In conservation, the journey from threat to triumph is often marked by the tireless efforts of advocates dedicated to protecting our natural heritage. Castner Range and Avi Kwa Ame National Monuments stand as a testament to the transformative power of grassroots community advocacy in safeguarding precious landscapes for future generations.

Before their designation as national monuments, Castner Range and Avi Kwa Ame faced looming threats of development and exploitation. Castner Range in El Paso, Texas, was at risk of being lost to urban sprawl and industrialization, while Avi Kwa Ame in southern Nevada faced the prospect of destruction due to mining and extraction activities, leaving these natural and national treasures rich in biodiversity and cultural significance on the brink of irreparable damage and loss.

Driven by deep-seated passion for environmental conservation and justice and commitment to their communities, families, and future generations, grassroots advocates mobilized to rally support for the protection of Castner Range and Avi Kwa Ame. Tribes, community members, and environmental and non-profit organizations joined forces to raise awareness, organize campaigns, and lobby policymakers. Through petitions, public demonstrations, and educational initiatives, these advocates amplified their voices and made a compelling case for the preservation of these landscapes.

Despite at times looking like a lost battle, thanks to the unwavering dedication of local communities and coalitions, Castner Range and Avi Kwa Ame were declared national monuments a year ago today, ensuring their protection for generations to come. Today, these landscapes serve as havens for biodiversity, outdoor recreation, spiritual connection, and cultural heritage. Visitors can explore the rugged beauty of Castner Range's desert terrain or immerse themselves in the sacred landscapes of Avi Kwa Ame, knowing that these natural treasures are safeguarded for posterity.

As national monuments, Castner Range and Avi Kwa Ame provide invaluable opportunities for future generations to connect with nature, learn about Indigenous cultures, and experience the wonder of the great outdoors. These protected areas offer refuge for wildlife, mitigate climate change, serve as reservoirs of natural resources, and as living classrooms for environmental education. By preserving these landscapes, we ensure that our children and grandchildren inherit a world rich in natural beauty and cultural heritage.

The journey of Castner Range and Avi Kwa Ame from threat to preservation underscores the power of advocacy in shaping the future of our planet and the value of initiatives like Latino Advocacy Week, taking place May 20–23, which helps build the capacity and empowers Latinos to advocate for themselves, their families, their community, and for the issues that impact their daily lives. By standing up for what we believe in, raising our voices, and taking action, we can protect and conserve our most cherished landscapes for generations to come.
