On the 17th of June, I and other fellow Washington Office Resource Assistants (RAs) were given the opportunity to visit the Yates building for the day. Due to working remotely, I was very excited to get the opportunity to visit what would’ve been my workspace. The opportunity was a surreal experience as I walked through the National Mall to get to the building and used my USDA ID to check-in.
I was able to get a tour of the building and see the Washington Monument from different windows, eat lunch on the National Mall, and watch President Biden sign Juneteenth into a federal holiday. As we wrapped up the day, we decided to take a picture outside of the Yates building next to the Forest Service shield. During this time a couple, currently hiking the Appalachian Trail, approached us asking if we worked for the Forest Service and what positions we held. The small encounter put into perspective the importance of our work and ensuring public lands remain open to everyone.
Working from home comes with its benefits; It allows flexibility and saving time from commuting. However, being behind a computer made me miss the ability to have daily encounters with coworkers and the public. I am grateful to have had at least a day to experience an in-person day at work and getting to finally meet the other RAs.
