My Purpose

Written by: DeVant'e Dawson

In celebration of Juneteenth, I would like to address why I chose the DFP opportunity through HAF & FWS. The simple answer would involve making connections to pursue my goal of a governmental career; however, there's more to it than just that. Through my matriculation at Tuskegee University and currently at the University of Florida for my Ph.D., I've realized a notable reoccurrence. Though my passion has always involved conservation and restoration, I never had a representation of people who looked like me in these fields. I understand that there is a lack of diversity within these fields and federal agencies, and this created a personal vendetta for me. I want to create representation for younger generations that I didn't have.

I always say God has my back because the perfect and right opportunities always present themselves, and this time is no different. HAF & FWS provides the unique opportunity for me to combine two of my passions, serving and strengthening my community plus conservation.... the federal part is just a bonus. With these two organizations, I can mold myself into that representation that is so desperately needed. Though I am working remotely, and it's only been a couple of weeks into my internship, interacting with my sites and various other individuals has shown me that other like-minded people are within both organizations. This opportunity has further cemented in my mind what I have envisioned for myself.
